Waving USA Flag Character Counts

We had the rare opportunity to spend a couple of great days (and a very cold night) at the US Navy Wilderness Survival Training Camp. Chief Rolls and his staff very generously shared their considerable expertise in this hands-on camp. Scouts learned how to identify several edible plants, how to test strange ones, and how to catch, clean and cook wild game.

The staff introduced themselves and discussed basic wilderness concerns and first-aid. Scouts learned how to improvise splints and stretchers.

The scouts (and leaders) made their own tents from pieces of parachute, about 3 feet of cord, and a bit of digging. These were our homes for the 20-degree night.
