March 2 - Cycling the L.A. Marathon

It's nearly time for our yearly venture to the L.A. Marathon. Major streets in Los Angeles are closed-off to automobiles, and instead of a grueling 8-hour run, we'll glide along past cheering crowds, bands and through red lights in less than 2 hours (an easy pace). Celebrities and about 15,000 other cyclists will be joining us as we "test" the course before the runners. Participants will receive commememorative T-shirts, medallions(upon completion of the course) and numerous other goodies. Water, bike repair and safety personnel are distributed along the course. Further information, including Acura cycling event registration are at: http://lamarathon.com. Bring a copy of your receipt to the next meeting and we will arrange to pickup your bib, T-shirt and goody bag for you. Tentative plans are to leave Temecula 3:30am Sunday March 3 and to return around 1:00pm. Contact Mark S if you are interested in joining us!

Venture Team 148

Troop 148 is starting a Venture Team, open to boys & girls at least 14 years old. Here is a Crew Officers Orientation to give you an idea of what this Scouting group can do! Please contact Mr. Mathews for more information if you are interested!

Camp Hellendade - Struck by Wildfire

I just received a phone call from one of our unit leaders who is a CA Dept of Fire Battalion Chief. He is on site at Camp Helendade in Running Springs this morning. Per his report, the Dining Hall, Lodge Bldgs, Upper restrooms and Ranger house are intact and still standing. Preliminary observation is that three structures were destroyed. The Pool House Bldg, New Handicraft Bldg and the Sports (Old Handicraft) Bldg are burnt to the ground. The fire apparently was a ground level fire with a few areas going up into the canopy of the trees. The Old Wisumahi area was hit hard and loss of trees in that area is massive. Pictures are now available at: www.camphelendade.org

We will be volunteering for a work weekend as soon as we can.

Make sure you are using your Troop Guidebook to record your Troop Activities. You should bring it to every meeting and present it at Scoutmaster conferences and Boards of Review. Any Scouts who do not have them and/or haven’t updated them will not be able to complete Scoutmaster Conferences or Board of Reviews. Extra pages for your Activity Log, Camping Log and Community Services Log can be found on the Troop links page.
